This can be the scene described in Edgar Allen Poe's " The Haunted Palace. ” Poe paints a picture of an elegant manor with spectacular features that comes under the influence of bad and thus comes to pieces. Upon better inspection, although, the reader begins to see that this is of the poem delves further than the break down of a residence: it is the devastation of the human mind that truly problems Poe. The double meaning is central to the poem and once the pattern of symbolism is made, the various other details show up nicely in place. Poe's diction emphasizes the original majesty of the house. At first, the property is " radiant” (4), " glorious” (9), " happy” (17), " fair” (26), " sparkling” (28), and " beaut[iful]” (31). Poe moves as far as saying " very good angels tenanted” the house (2) and the home is better and gentler than angels' clothing (7). Then, in the fifth stanza, the scene changes substantially: the building is no longer majestic and stately, it is lived on by evil and is in disarray. It is now permeated by simply " sorrow” (33) and is " desolate” (35). The sudden move from enjoyable words to mournful types alerts someone to the dreadful change that has taken place inside your home.
