Columbia University, Nyc, May 14th 2011

Thanks a lot, Dean Coatsworth, for your kind words of introduction.

President Bollinger, distinguished faculty, happy parents, caring friends and, most importantly, the graduates with the class of 2011, great afternoon.

I am honored to be a component to such a joyous occasion, and at a great institution and so close to my heart.

Coming from receiving a great honorary level from Columbia in 1998 to my current role as a Global Many other, I depend myself very fortunate to have enjoyed a long-standing marriage with fantastic university.

When I was Secretary-General, I actually regularly took on Columbia as well as its faculty for advice within the most important of global problems.

So today I feel privileged to be able to repay a little of this debt by sharing a lot of thoughts with you – the newly released of commanders.

Students of the students of 2011, you – and your father and mother and partners– have every single reason for pride.

Certain amount from SIPA is not only proof of your intellect and effort. It also shows your determination to focus on the problems our world faces.

But I have to point out to you which the diploma you are receiving also holds with this a big responsibility.

It is a responsibility to apply the knowledge you have gained and the analytical skills you may have learned to aid find and deliver the solutions to improve lives, extend chances, and provide your areas.

There may be plenty for you to do. The difficulties are, as you know, unprecedented in scale and complexity.

Intense poverty, starvation, disease, and natural catastrophes, are still popular and will just be made worse by climate change. Wars inside and between states, indivisible proliferation, and transnational arranged crime as well remain undeniable.

And in the final five years, we have experienced a severe rise in global food rates, soaring energy costs and, the gravest economic crisis within the last 60 years.

These kinds of interlinked downturn threaten to reverse the progress towards Millennium Expansion Goals, and remind all of us that inequality remains probably the most shameful and chronic problems in society.

Today we live in a world in which a sub-prime crisis in the US speedily spread to every economy, being jobs and shrinking incomes.

It is just a world exactly where infectious disease can pass on across continents within days and nights.

It is a world exactly where governments have got recognized the responsibility to protect all their citizens coming from genocide, conflict crimes and crimes against humanity.

Our fortunes, expectations and concerns are indeed connected together while never before.

Yet I fear we now have not yet internalized the modify of attitude required neither the responsibility that places in us all.

We need to embrace a brand new ethos that emphasizes co-operation and accepts shared responsibility for transnational problems.

Our progress must be shared or perhaps it will not be lasting.

This requires leadership that acknowledges that long-term progress and sturdy solutions have to be based on distributed values and goals.

It must be driven by simply big goal and never-ending creativity nevertheless grounded inside our common humankind.

And this can be where we turn to you. For you are the first era who can genuinely call her global citizens.

We need one to take the business lead. Indeed through our TELEVISION SET screens and computers, we can see it is already happening.

In North The african continent and the Middle section East, it can be young people who have are requiring change for the better.

Young Arab men - and significantly, women - have declined to stand idly by simply and allow dictatorships to continue neglecting their persons.

They have issued a wake-up call to repressive regimes everywhere.

In the event that leaders fail to lead, the people can make them follow.
